Chiropractic is the science and art of disorders of the neuromuscular skeletal structures (particularly the spinal column and the nervous system) and the innate recuperative powers of the body. Chiropractors identify structural and functional changes within the musculoskeletal system, affecting neurological, lymphatic and vascular function.
The chiropractor’s goal is to remove spinal nerve interference and normalize function. Chiropractors can help prevent future problems through education, exercise, and lifestyle modifications.
Holistic chiropractors treat the whole person, using spinal manipulation, extremity and soft tissue manipulation, massage, trigger point release, physical therapies, exercises, nutrition and lifestyle changes.
Chiropractors are most often used to treat musculoskeletal complaints (e.g., spine and extremities). Also, because of its positive effects on the nervous and circulatory systems, chiropractic can be used to enhance physical function (often used in athletic activities) and to enhance and maintain immune function and general health.
Advanced Pain Relief
Unless you or someone you know has struggled with severe injury, chronic pain, or degenerative disease, it’s difficult to understand the impact it can have on life. But if you struggle with chronic pain, you know its debilitating effects. You’ve likely given up hobbies, family activities, and travel in your efforts to control pain and maintain functionality. Unfortunately, until now, the only treatment options for these type of conditions have been surgery or addictive pain killers, which often have unwelcome side effects. But recent advances in medical technology may offer advanced, effective relief. K-Laser, a state-of-the-art, Class IV laser therapy, has been found to penetrate tissue and initiate healing on a cellular level, even allowing some patients to return to normal, everyday activities with little to no pain.
THE SECRET IS LIGHT ENERGY
K-Laser, also known as High Power Laser Therapy, targets damaged tissue with specific wavelengths of light that have been found to interact with tissue and accelerate the healing process. Much like photosynthesis in plants, light energy passes through the skin, into the cell membrane, initiating a process called photobiostimulation. This process enhances the body’s natural regenerative functions, as well as stimulating the release of endorphins and collagen. It may eventually even normalize damaged or injured tissue.
The Result? Accelerated wound healing, as well as reduced pain, stiffness, swelling, and spasms. As the injured area returns to normal, function is restored, so patients may take their life back and resume their favorite hobbies and activites.
CONDITIONS TREATED WITH THE K-LASER
High power laser therapy can stimulate all cell types, including soft tissue, ligaments, cartilage, and nerves. Some conditions that have been shown to respond well to K-Laser include:
· Peripheral Neuropathy, Fibromyalgia
· Back and Neck Pain
· Sciatic Pain
· Arthritus pain, Degenerative Discs/Joints
· Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
· Knee Problems
· Tendinitus, Trigger Fingers
· Bunion Pains, Plantar Fasciitis
· Sprains and/or Strains
· Bruises, Contusions, Burns · Headaches, TMJ, Sinus Trouble
· Athletic Injuries
· Work-Related and Auto Injuries
RESULTS MAY EVEN BE SEEN AFTER 1 TREATMENT
Many patients report pain relief in as little as one treatment, and most are able to resume normal daily activites with no pain and restricted movement after their therapy is completed. Treatments are administed by a technician, using a hand-held device the size of a flash light. The laser is placed directly over the injured area for anywhere from 30 seconds to 9 minutes, depending on the size of the area being treated and the treatment plan. Most patients report a warm, relaxing sensation. They generally experience no side effects or recovery period.
THE GOAL IS HEALING, NOT MERELY SYMPTOM RELIEF
For too long, medicine has focused on symptom relief rather than true healing. K-Laser offers an alternative, and it’s a welcome change for athletes as well as patients interested in natural remedies.
Are you a candidate for K-Laser Therapy?
If you suffer from chronic pain, laser therapy may give you your life back. You owe it to yourself to try the advanced treatment options that are now available. K-Laser can make a difference.
The proper term for this title should be “Acupoint Physical Medicine.” Acupuncture is specifically defined by individual State Boards as; “the insertion of needles beneath the skin surface.” Even though the “practice of acupuncture” through needle insertion requires a state license. All health professionals certified in physical therapy may utilize the “principles of acupuncture” while utilizing quick, effective, Acupoint stimulation through accepted non-penetrating procedures.
The procedures taught in “Acupoint Physical Medicine” are the identical principles, theories and academics of Asia needle acupuncture, however, it’s primary mode of point stimulation is through modern physio-therapy modalities and other non-invasive internationally and Board accepted procedures. There is virtually no difference in clinic results with the piercing needle or modern non-invasive methods.
Stimulation of the Acupuncture Points are with electrical and/or laser. No needles are used.
Stimulation of specific points can positively affect the nervous, circulatory and lymphatic systems, which in turn regulate every organ, gland, cell and tissue in the body.
There are 12 major energy Meridian pathways in the body, six on each side, with 365 specific points ( and several hundred “extra points), mapped by the Chinese practitioners over the last 2000 years (some say 5000 years)!
Acupoint Physical Medicine therapy may be beneficial for:
· Orthopedic problems, including Back, Neck, Spinal, and Joint pain.
· Neurological complaints including Sciatica, Migraines, Tension Headaches, Bells Palsy, Shingles, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, and Fibromyalgia.
· Mental/ Emotional disorders including Anxiety, Depression, ADD/ADHD, Battlefield Acupuncture points are used for PTSD, anxiety, depression, etc.
· Gynecological disorders including Infertility, PMS, and Menopause.
· Respiratory disorders, including Asthma, Allergies, and Sinusitis.
· Assistance in Smoking cessation or other Addictions
Frequency Specific Micro-current:
What is Micro-current? Frequency Specific Micro-current is a new system of treatment using micro-amperage current and the resonance effects of frequencies on tissues and conditions to create beneficial changes in symptoms and health.
Microcurrent is a electric current that is so small it is measured in millionths of an amp, usually below pain threshold. Most people don’t feel anything, maybe a warm sensation. (However, if you are dehydrated, it will not be as effective and may tingle (mild stinging). If you are considering getting treatment, be sure to hydrate
yourself. Rule of thumb: drink ½ of your body wt. in water per day, example 200 lbs. drink 100 oz. of water per day).
“Living matter is highly organized and exceedingly sensitive to the information conveyed by coherent signals…..” “Each cell, tissue and organ has an ideal resonant frequency that coordinates its activities.” –James Oschman, PhD (Biochemist) Dover, NH
How does it work ? Microcurrent is a electric modality that physiologically increases ATP (up to 500%) which is “energy” production of the cells of your body. This action dramatically increases the tissue’s healing rate. Changes in the tissue are unmistakable, with softening of tissue, scars softening and reducing in size, trigger points become less painful, swollen tissue often drain immediately.
The explanation of the effects of specific frequencies on specific tissues and conditions must start with a quantum view of physical tissue instead of a Newtonian or mechanical view. On a macromolecular level, the glycoproteins extend across the cell surface from the cell interior to the exterior. These proteins connect with the filamentous network within the cell. The filamentous network is a crystalline gel lined by water molecules and conveys and stores current, charge and vibrational information. (Oschman 1997).
Frequency Specific Microcurrent (FSM) means that there is a specific frequency for conditions, and specific frequency for each type of tissue. Example: there is a specific frequency for conditions such as “inflammation, chronic inflammation, fibrosis, irritation, pain, spasm, trauma, etc. and specific frequency for specific tissues such as: nerves, a different frequency for muscles, tendons, ligaments, disc, bursa, lymphatics, etc. To address the underlying injury, we need to know the mechanism of injury or cause.
The current theory to explain the principle of how FSM works is of “biologic resonance”. A singer can shatter a glass when the note resonates with the crystal structure of the glass. Microcurrent frequencies seem to be able to resonate with biologic tissue when the frequency is correct. Animal research studies confirms that the frequency to reduce inflammation by 62%. Prescription drugs reduce inflammation by 45% in the same animal studies.
How long do the treatments last ? Every patient is different, but the changes to the muscles seem to last a long time. About 60% to 80% of the changes made in one treatment seem to last until the next visit as long as they are not more than 5 to 7 days apart. The muscles may return to the old condition if not treated again within 5 to 7 days. Most patients need 3 to 12 treatments, with severe problems needing more. We usually recommend nutritional/herbal/homeopathy supplements to help with inflammation and pain.
Are there any side effects ? The harmonized FSM appears to change the tone of the tissue, removing stored waste products and increasing ATP production and cellular metabolism, whichwill likely cause a detoxification effect after treatment. The side effects can include fatigue, nausea, drowsiness, feeling like “cold or flu symptoms” several hours after the treatment, and lasting from 3-4 hours, up to 24 hours. Some people don’t have any reaction or side effects. The by-products from the muscles, and tissue released are processed by the liver and kidney detoxification pathways. You should be well hydrated with water before the treatment, and you should drink at least two quarts of water (purified or distilled water), after the treatment. These procedures will stop or at least lessen the side effects.
What can the Frequencies treat ? The frequencies appear to change a variety of conditions and tissues and change pain and function in a large number of clinical conditions. (www. Frequencyspecificmicrocurrent.com ). FSM is especially effective at treating nerve and muscle pain, inflammation and scar tissue. There is a specific frequency that responds to shingles, that greatly reduces the pain, and causes the lesions to dry up in approximately two or three days. The treatment time is very important in certain conditions, example:
Shingles, 1 hour treatment time, (less than an hour is not effective) three days in a row, or three days in a week. Most people require 6 to 10 treatments to finish the protocol for shingles, along with antiviral supplements, and essential oils for pain. Bells Palsy also responds to microcurrent, especially treating acupuncture points on the face and head using a microcurrent pointer. There is only one frequency combination that has been 100% effective in eliminating kidney stone pain. This frequency combination does nothing to remove the stone, it only eliminates the pain.
The frequencies have created observed effects in asthma, liver dysfunction (reducing elevated liver enzymes), irritable bowel, bronchitis, and pnumonia and many other conditions. We have good results with treating bulging spinal disc problems, it is observed that it takes 4 to 5 treatments (each treatments runs an hour or so) ,before any real subjective reduction of pain and swelling. Most patients then have consistent improvement with reduction of pain and swelling, especially if they follow a consistent schedule,( there are now portable units available now, for buying and renting. These units can be worn 24/7 if desired ) and take the botanicals for inflammation. Neuropathies, including diabetic neuropathy responds to treatments, with relief usually starting with the 3rd, to 4th treatment and improving more with continued treatments. Most patients have lasting results by 10 to12 treatments, some patients need follow-up treatments to maintain their relief. FSM treatments on Fibroids have shrunk or completely disappeared (verified with ultrasound studies) with 10 to 12 treatments, (usually along with iodine treatments).
Remarkable results have been observed in patients who are treated within 4 hours of a new injury, including auto accidents, sprains & strains and surgeries have much reduced pain and a greatly accelerated healing process.
Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT):
EFT is based on a new discovery that has provided thousands with relief from pain, diseases and emotional issues. Simply stated, it is an emotional version of acupuncture except needles aren’t necessary. Instead, stimulation of the well established energy meridian points on your body is done by tapping with the fingertips. It launches off the EFT Discovery Statement which says, “The cause of all negative emotions is a disruption in the body’s energy system.”
And because our physical pains and diseases are so obviously connected with our emotions the following statement has also proven to be true: “Our unresolved negative emotions are major contributors to most physical pains and diseases.” For more information, please refer to www.eftuniverse.com.
Extremity means arms and legs, hands or feet, etc. Chiropractors adjust or manipulate the hands, wrists, elbows, shoulders, feet, ankles, knees and jaw joints. Chiropractors have published studies of treament for acute inversion ankle sprain, knee problems, elbow pain (lateral epicondylitis), plantar fasciitis, heel spurs, Achilles tendonitis, hip osteoarthritis, frozen shoulder, rotator cuff muscle injury, carpal tunnel syndrome, ribs and TMJ (jaw joint). Knee problems that develope gradually over time, without tramatic injury, and if caught early, can usually be helped with corrective orthotics, which help balance “excessive pronation” of the feet. Dr. Vail is certified in sports injuries and rehabilitation.
Hair Analysis/Lab Testing:
A hair analysis is a test that measures the mineral content of your hair. The mineral content of your hair reflects the mineral content of your body’s tissue. The hair can be up to 300 times more sensitive than the blood in measuring the mineral content. Heavy metals such as mercury, aluminum, arsenic, lead, cadmium and more can be detected, as well.
Part of the confusion (in the past) with hair analysis is that labs use different hair preparation procedures. For example, some labs do not pre-wash the hair sample, some wash the samples three times, some eleven times. This washes out certain minerals to various degrees. Results are not standardized but depend on which lab you use. Therefore, you cannot compare hair analyses from different labs to one another, a more fair comparison would be to send the same hair sample, under different names, to the same lab, and then compare results.
Toxic metals on a hair analysis will often not show up initially, especially if the patient has low adrenal and thyroid function. This is because it takes energy to excrete metals, the hair being one route for excretion.
Ratios are very diagnostic of developing problems. Hair analysis ratios indicate problems at the cellular level. For example, a high calcium to potassium ratio indicates sluggish thyroid function. That is, the thyroid hormone is not working effectively in the cells. This ratio will deviate long before hormone blood values deviate and therefore it is predictive of developing thyroid problems.
Who Needs a Hair Analysis?
Anyone who is found ill and has no explanation or when the therapy doesn’t seem to be effective. Even if you are not experiencing a severe problem, hair analysis is an invaluable screening tool which allows a correct program of diet and supplementation to be designed for each individual’s specific needs.
Dr. Vail uses various lab testing facilities including:
· Genova Diagnostics (formerly Great Smokies Diagnostic Lab)
· Diagnosis Techs, Inc. (urine & saliva test)
· Biological Terraine (in-house urine & saliva test)
· Cyrex Labs
· Principal lab (Lab Core)

What is Homeopathy?
Homeopathic medicine is a clinical-pharmaceutical system which uses microdoses of substances derived from palnts, minerals or animals for the purposes of stimulating the natural healing response. [Bellavite & Signorini, 1995]
This system claims to cure diseases using remedies which are prepared according to particular procedures of dilution and dynamization (percussion which adds kinetic energy according to the principles of physics).
These remedies are chosen according to a complex methodology based on the law of similars.
The law of similars states that a disease can be cured by administering the patient a substance, which in healthy individuals casuses symptoms similar to those of the disease. For example, if a person is stung by a bee, the venom causes a characteristic wheal with pain and swelling which is helped by application of cold compresses. The homeopath will administer bee extract in a homeopathic remedy (Apis) to cure patients presenting with this symptom (Urticaria) with wheals and pain similar to those of bee stings may also respond to this remedy.
The history of homeopathy is very ineresting in the fact that it was popular in this country, especially around the late 1800s and early 1900s when one out of four physicians were homeopaths. There were 22 homeopathic medical schools and over 100 homeopathic hospitals. With the development of synthetic aspirin and financial and political support for only the medical schools, homeopathy declined.
Homeopathy’s current popularity has grown considerably in the US over the past couple of decades but is is still much greater in other countries, particularly in India, England, France, the former USSR, Mexico, Brazil and Argentina. In India there are over 70,000 registered homeopathic practitioners and almost that many in Pakistan. There are over 35 colleges in England that teach homeopathy and two full-time homeopathy colleges in London. The royal family has been under homeopathic care since the 1930s. France has over 6000 physicians actively practicing homeopathy. Over 18,000 pharmacies sell hemeopathic medicine.
There are two primary prescribing procedures in Doctor Vail’s office: acute prescribing and classical. Acute prescribing is matching the current symptoms with those that the medicine is known to cure. Classical prescribing is about a two hour process of interviewing the patient and collecting complete and accurate information about the patient and matching the remedy that best suits the person and his or her illness (not just the symptoms).
Kinesiology tape is a thin, stretch, elastic cotton and/or nylon strip with an acrylic adhesive. Therapeutic kinesiology tape can benefit a wide variety of musculoskeletal and sports injuries.
Kinesiology tape is used for treating athletic injuries and a variety of physical disorders. For the first decade after its introduction in the late 1970’s, practitioners in Japan were the main users of the therapeutic kinesiology tape. By 1988 the tape had been adopted by Japanese Olympic and professional athletes before spreading across the world.
If you are involved in sporting events or enjoy watching sporting events, especially the Olympic Games, you would have noticed that athletes of all different types of events are using kinesiology tape to improve their
performance, prevent or support weaken or injured areas. Taping will help athletes heal quicker, and allow them to return to competition quicker.
RockTape was developed in 2012, because of failure of regular kinesiology tape under heavy use in competitive events.
How is RockTape different?
· Superior materials: It does cost more than regular kinesiology tape, but it stays on, much longer than other tapes, usually 3 to 5 days. I’ve had many patients wear RockTape a week or more. It is hypoallergenic, containing no latex or zinc. ( It is recommended to not wear the tape longer than 5 days!).
· The developers of RockTape wanted a superior “snap-back”, which is the ability of the tape to stretch without too much resistance, yet assist the muscles when they return back to neutral. They choose a special nylon called 6/12, which provided the right stretch and recovery dynamics. RockTape is 97% cotton, and 3% nylon.
· RockTape stretches with 180% elasticity, which gives the athlete better range of motion, without feeling bound-up. Other tapes only stretch 130-150%.
· Different sizes of tape, 1 inch, 2 inch and 4 inch rolls. Competitors only make one width of tape, 2 inch, and some can be ordered in pre-cut sizes (which can be inconvenient and wasteful), and some with precut corners. There is a big difference between a 6’8” 300 lb. football player and a 90 lb. swimmer. Bigger size, bigger taping needs, etc.!
One of the main things about RockTape that impressed me was seeing a diagram of the different levels of skin (derma, fat, superficial retinacula cutis fibers, superficial fascial membrane, deep retinacula fibers, deep fascial membrane, and muscle tissue) where they had done an ultrasound image of untaped skin, and then doing another ultrasound image of taped skin. RockTape did indeed lift the skin and fascial membranes. The design of the tape creates “snap-back” lifting the skin and fascial membranes, allowing for increased circulation of blood, lymphatic vessels drainage, freeing nerve transmissions, and allowing faster healing and recovery from injuries, reducing inflammation, increasing hydration in the area of injury.
What is MediCupping? MediCupping is a modern adaptation of the ancient Chinese technique, “Acupuncture cupping”. Cupping therapy is a form of alternative medicine in which cups made from bamboo, earthware, or glass are made devoid of oxygen by very briefly inserting a small flame into them, and quickly placed on the skin to create suction. This suction is believed to mobilize blood flow to promote healing of a broad range of medical ailments.
Cupping therapy dates back to ancient Egyptian, Middle Eastern, and Chinese cultures. The medical textbook “Ebers Papyrus,” one of the oldest medical texts in the world, describes how the ancient Egyptians were using cupping therapy in 1550B.C.
In traditional Chinese cupping therapy, stationary cups are placed on the skin and left in the same location for 5 to 15 minutes, which usually leaves the “sucker” marks on the skin!
MediCupping uses a vacuum machine, with glass cups, to create suction on the body surfaces. Oil is first used on the skin to provide a seal for the cups edges. The cups are gently lifted up and glided over the skin, using shaking, rotating and popping techniques depending on different skin conditions. This suction reaches deep into the soft tissue, pulling inflammation and toxins from the body tissue, thru the circulation and lymphatic system can readily eliminate them. Scar tissue often releases quickly, despite the age of the injury or keloid tendencies.
MediCupping (Vacu-therapy) is becoming known for the beneficial effects on the following conditions:
· Lymphedema- general and past surgeries ( i.e., breast surgeries, breast cancer, and lymph node removal ).
· Scarring-old and new, post surgery, stretch marks and adhesion’s underneath tattoos.
· Fibromyalgia and other auto-immune issues.
· Sprains, strains, and tears.
· Vascular issues- spider veins, and varicosites.
· Plantar Fasciitis, and Compartment Syndromes (excessive pressure in fascia compartments,on nerves, blood vessels, and muscles).
· Deep tissue and structural issues—old injuries and chronic movement patterns.
· Significant weight loss.
· Parkinson’s disease.
· Chronic myositis ,(muscle knots and trigger points) that don’t release with other therapies.
· And many more…
A naturopathic physician is a doctor trained like any other doctor of general family practice. Naturopathic physicians diagnose patients’ problems similar to other physicians but they don’t use pharmaceutical medicines. They use natural botanicals, herbs, homeopathy and nutritional supplements. Naturopathic physicians are trained to not just treat symptoms, but to treat the cause of the “disease.”
Fundamental Principles of Naturopathic Medicine:
1. First, do no harm. Naturopathic physicians utilize methods and medicinal substances which minimize the risk of harmful effects, although sometimes this does not mean without side effects. For
example, de-toxification can have some unpleasant side-effects. Whenever possible the suppression of symptoms is avoided as suppression generally interferes with the healing process.
2. Treat the whole person. Everyone is different…biochemically, genetically, emotionally, mentally, environmentally and spiritually. Naturopathic physicians treat the whole person, taking these factors into account.
3. Naturopaths practice and believe in the healing power of nature. This belief includes the concept that the body can heal itself of just about anything if clear of toxins and if given proper nutrition, rest, mental outlook and natural stimulation.
4. Find the cause. Every ailment, dis-ease or illness has an underlying cause, often in aspects of the individual’s lifestyle, diet or habits. Naturopathic physicians are trained to find and remove the underlying cause of a disease.
5. Preventative medicine. “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” It is much easier to prevent minor illnesses from developing into more serious diseases. Patients are taught the principles with which to live a healthy life and by following these principles, they can prevent major illnesses.
The human nervous system is responsible for coordinating thousands of processes, from muscle contractions to crying. The center of the nervous system is the brain, which contains over 100 billion specialized cells called neurons. The nervous system also contains very important chemical messengers called neurotransmitters. The brain uses neurotransmitters to tell your heart to beat, your lungs to breathe and your somach to digest. Neurotransmitters are also necessary for thought processes, emotions and other essential body functions including sleep, energy, panic and fear.
Clearly a system with this much responsibility needs to function properly in order for a person to remain healthy. Unfortunately, the nervous system can be easily disrupted through a number of factors:
· Poor diet
· Toxic chemicals
These factors can cause the levels of neurotransmitters to become either too high or too low. Imbalanced neurotransmitter levels can lead to:
· Feelings of sadness
· Feelings of anxiousness
· Disrupted sleep
· Behavioral problems
· Foggy thinking
· Acetylcholine – the memory and learning neurotransmitter
· Serotonin – the joy and well-being neurotransmitter
· GABA – the “relaxed and calm” neurotransmitter
· Dopamine – the pleasure and reward neurotransmitter
The best way to test is to assess your symptoms. Options for improving nervous system function (using natural products) can be discussed with your healthcare provider.
Nutritional therapy is a way of using food and plant supplements to treat a large percentage of the body’s health problems. Botanicals are included as part of nutritional therapy. Botanicals are plants or parts of a plant valued for its medicinal or therapeutic properties, flavor and/or scent. Herbs are botanicals.
Natural healing, using food and food supplements can be accomplished by:
· Correcting vitamin and mineral deficiencies
· Detoxifying the body
· Balancing thyroid, adrenal, hormones and other gland and body functions.
· Healing and restoring healthy digestion and bowel function. Helping restore mental and emotional well-being.
To achieve the above goals, a complete medical history, family history and dietary history will be taken. Tests such as blood chemistry, hair analysis, hormone, bone health, food intolerance panels, parasitic and GI health tests can be ordered. In-house urine and saliva tests for dysbiosis, vitamin C status, zinc status, calcium metabolism, free radical assessment and many more can be done. All these tests along with numerous questionnaires and several clinical tests are all available to help us better understand your current health status and needs.
I have over 30 years experience using and recommending vitamins, minerals, whole-food supplements and herbs. He uses the most natural form of a nutrient and the purest herbs in his practice, avoiding synthetic substances whenever possible. Experience has proven that even a lot of those companies that sell only to physicians have products that are synthetic.
The company that I use and recommend (the leader in the field of natural organic whole food supplements for 75 years) is Standard Process, Inc.
In partnership with Standard Process is Mediherb, a medicinal herb company from Australia. These two product lines are now combined and are the primary natural supplements and herbs used by Dr. Vail.
Standard Process is unique in the fact that they have total control of their products from the time the seeds are planted until the products are shipped to the doctor. They use certified organic farming methods on their 1000 acres of farmland with the manufacturing facility right in the middle of the farm. They have the highest quality standards in the whole-food industry. The state government of Wisconsin (where Standard Process is
located) and state universities send people to the Standard Process farm to see first hand what a quality organic farm operation is like.
A few years ago, when I first heard about Standard Process partnering with a company from Australia for their herb line of products, I was puzzled with why they didn’t choose an American herbal company. I have been educated about the difference. I have used the products personally and, as well, have had the experience of recommending them to my patients. I have seen excellent results and I totally understand the reason for the choice. MediHerb is, in my opinion, the top herbal company on the planet.
In the U.S., herbal products are considered dietary supplements and there are no government regulation standards. The situation is very different in Australia, where herbs are considered medicines and are regulated by the federal government as medicine. MediHerb must comply with the same laws as pharmaceutical companies and the manufacturing plant has to comply with these standards, as well. All product claims must be verified by traditional knowledge or scientific evidence. What this means is that you receive a safe and effective product that has been manufactured to pharmaceutical standards.
Natural vs. Synthetic Vitamin Supplements
The average person taking daily vitamins (or a one-a-day vitamin) has no idea that the vitamins are very likely synthetic. The Organic Consumers Association recently announced a nationwide campaign called “Nutri-con: The Truth About Vitamins and Supplements.” They have exposed the fact that 90% or more of the vitamins, minerals and supplements now on the market labeled as “natural” or “food-based” actually are spiked with synthetic chemicals.
Putting the word “natural” on the vitamin label is in most cases deception! Many misleading labels on supplement products take advantage of the ambiguity of the word “natural” to project a wholesome marketing image, even when the product is not at all natural. Whole-food supplements are those with labeled potencies derived from the plants themselves by exclusive manufacturing procedures. They are custom engineered to preserve the nutrients of the raw materials. Whole-food supplements contain all the essential trace minerals necessary for the synergistic operation of that product. Synthetic vitamins contain no trace minerals and must utilize the body’s own mineral reserves!
When the body is saturated or overwhelmed with large amounts of synthetic vitamins or does not possess the cofactors necessary for utilization, the body will work to eliminate the synthetics through the liver, kidneys, lungs, skin and other organs. Large doses (mega) of synthetic vitamins can cause serious health problems. Dr. Royal Lee wrote that “the biggest mistake made in the art of therapeutics or nutrition is in assuming that if a little is good, more is better.” He goes on to say vitamin B1 in small doses can cure herpes zoster (shingles) while large doses can cause herpes zoster. Thiamine (B1) has other disturbing toxic effects. Thiamine can cause fatty degeneration of the liver and choline or ipecac (ordinarily effective in preventing such changes) is ineffective in this case. Various physicians have confidently reported deaths in human patients from liver desease aggravated by thiamine treatment.
Commercial marketing of vitamins and minerals has created the myth that synthetic vitamins and inorganic minerals are the same as natural whole-food supplements and organic minerals. This is really far from the truth!
A beam of polarized light passing through a natural food supplement (natural vitamin) will always bend to the right (dextro) due to its molecular rotation. However, this same light ray passing through a synthetic vitamin will split into two parts, one part bending to the right and the other to the left (levo). Because the synthetic vitamin is half dextro and half levo, the letters “dl” often appear on labels at the beginning of the synthetic name. Example: “dl Tocopherol” (so called vitamin E). Only the dextro half can be absorbed by the body. A synthetic vitamin is like the image in a mirror. It looks like the real thing but doesn’t function like the real thing.
Which would you rather have – the real food or the mirror image of the food? Nutritional Therapy Part II
Physical Therapy Modalities:
A variety of physical therapy modalities are used to help treat different types of neuromusculoskeletal problems. They can help control pain, relax muscle spasms, strengthen muscles, increase circulation, heal tendons and ligaments and decrease bones spurs and inflammation.
Ultrasound machines utilize ultra high sound wave frequencies that penetrate soft tissue all the way to the bone. These penetrating sound waves create heat (in the 100% mode) warming the muscles, increasing vasodialation and therefore circulation that helps treat muscle spasms and tightness. Sound waves 50% or less decrease inflammation, which is good for ankle sprains and other injuries that have swelling, edema. Ultrasound can dissolve the sharp edges on a bone spur and breaks down and disperses unhealthy calcium and other hard tissue accumulation.
Electric stimulation uses an electric current to cause muscles or a group of muscles to contract and then relax in specific patterns. This action will release muscle spasms, increase circulation, move lymphatic fluid and decrease pain.
Cold packs are a frozen gel substance used to treat areas of pain and inflammation. The cold packs are wrapped in a thin towel and applied directly to the area in need of treatment. The cold is transferred to the patient’s skin, muscles and tissue. The beneficial effects are reduction of pain, inflammation and swelling.
Moist heat packs are wrapped in a cover that is several layers thick and placed on the area that needs treatment. Several important benefits are provided by the heat. It relaxes tight muscles causing the tissue to relax. This decreases pain caused by muscle tension or spasms. It also causes vasodialation of the blood vessels with increased circulation to the area. Patients with muscle spasms or arthritis often benefit from treatment with moist hot packs.
Diathermy is a deep penetration heat which is much deeper than moist heat packs. It can be very helpful for sinus congestion, chest colds, menstrual cramps and many other conditions.
Frequency specific microcurrent uses specific microcurrent frequencies to treat chronic resistant myofascial pain and fibromyalgia pain as well as many other problems. Microcurrent devices deliver frequencies of current in millionths of an amp and published studies have shown that it increases energy (ATP) production in cells by 500%. This increase in energy causes the cells to dump toxins, sometimes causing side effects if not handled correctly. Dr. Vail has been using frequency specific microcurrent since 1998 and has found an amazing number of health concerns that are helped by it. This list includes myofascial pain, firbromyalgia, sports injuries, concussions, bells palsy, neuropathy, sinusitis, chest congestions, especially in bronchitis, pneumonias, common cold, firbroids, TMJ pain, sprains, shingles* and much, much more.
*Patients with shingles have had excellent response to treatments with microcurrent, especially combined with homeopathic and botanicals.
Shingles & Post-Hepatic Neuralgia:
Shingles and post-hepatic neuralgia are conditions involving the nerves presumed to be caused by immune or viral disease. Shingles is the common name for Herpes Zoster, which is caused by the Varicella-Zoster virus, the same virus that causes Chickenpox. It may occur at any age but is most common after age 50.
Signs and symptoms of Shingles can include chills and fever, malaise (a vague feeling of discomfort), and gastro-intestinal (GI) disturbances several days before distinctive features of the disease develop, with or without pain along the site of future eruptions. On about the 4th or 5th day, characteristic crops of vesicles (small sacs containing fluid) will appear, following the distribution of one or more of the nerve roots involved. The eruptions are usually hypersensitive and the pain may be severe. The eruptions are usually only on one side of the body. They begin to dry and scab about the 5th or 6th day and run their course in about 2 weeks. If the spread continues, or the lesions persist beyond 2 weeks, immune defects become suspect. Shingles itself is not contagious, but it can spread the chickenpox virus, especially to children or adults in the state where the blisters are forming and full of fluid. Once they are dried up, it is no longer contagious.
One attack of Herpes Zoster usually confers immunity. However, I have seen reoccurrences in some elderly patients, usually in the ones with weak immune systems. Most patients recover without complications, except for scarring of the skin. However, post-hepatic neuralgia may persist for months or years, most frequently in the elderly. Having pain continue after the lesions disappear can be a very painful and agonizing experience, especially if it continues for months on end with little to no relief.
Medical treatment is usually corticosteroids and prednisone taken orally for pain management. All precautions associated with prescribing corticosterooids should be observed, especially for side effects. Side effects of corticosterids include an increase in the risk of high blood pressue and bone disease in older persons. Corticosteroids also may lower a person’s resistance to infections and make infections harder to treat. Other common side effects include changes in blood sugar levels, changes in appetitie, nervousness, restlessness, sleep problems and indigestion. Intramuscular B12 injections can help accelerate the healing of acute Herpes Zoster.
Alternative treatments include K-Laser treatments that are painless and only take 3-5 minutes each treatment. Multiple treatments are needed, usually tri-weekly for 2-3 weeks. Herbal tinctures used topically can give amazing relief. Other alternative treatments include microcurrent (especially frequency specific microcurrent), acupuncture, homeopathy and herbal botanicals. Good results have been obtained using these alternative treatments, especially in stubborn and painful cases that haven’t responded to prescription medications. Frequency specific microcurrent (FSM) uses a pair of frequences (both used at the same time) that takes away from Shingles pain. When it is used before or immediately after the blisters break out, the treatment is for an hour a day for three days in a row or one two hour treatment. These treatments can diminish the pain in as little as 20 minutes and the blisters will either not break out or will be minimized. I have had patients that have come in the day the Shingles broke out in blister and the FSM treatments stopped the remaining spots from forming blisters. When FSM is used after the blisters break out it can reduce the intensity of the pain, and in some cases take the pain away. Relief can last for hours to days with each treatment. FSM almost always shortens the course of the Shingles and provides great benefits against Post-Hepatic Neuralgia.

Sports Injuries & Rehabilitation:
Dr. Vail is certified in sports injuries and rehabilitation from the Los Angeles College of Chiropractic Post Graduate Department (a one-year post graduate degree program). Sports injuries consist of injuries to the extremeties, hands, fingers, wrists, elbows, shoulders, hips, knees, feet, toes, etc.
Treatment often consists of first controlling the pain and swelling, then stabilizing the joint or injury. Once the injury has become stable and the pain decreased to the point of reestablishing range of motion (ROM), and/or weight bearing, it then becomes time to begin therapeutic exercises and strengthening rehabilitation.
The most noticeable effect of joint immobilization is atrophy of the muscle of the affected limb or area. Atrophy is loss of muscle size and strength. A second consideration in every trauma is the neurological Law of Facilitation, briefly stated as follows: “When an impulse passes through a certain set of neurons to the exclusion of others, it will take the same course on future occasions; each time it traverses this path the resistance in the path will be less.”
An athletic injury or joint requiring rehabilitation will demonstrate facilitated pathways that are cyclic and are bing manifested by muscle spasm, ischemia (lack of blood supply), hypoxia (lack of oxygen), pain, muscle weakness and joint instability. Successful rehabilitation depends upon elimination of each and all facilitated pathways.
Auto accidents often involve spinal injuries, most often the cervical spine, “whip-lash” type injuries, head trauma and other parts of the spine and body. Mild injuries can take up to six to eight weeks to heal with very little or no permanent joint or tissue damage. Moderate injuries can take three to six months with some permanent damage and severe injuries can take up to a year or longer and usually involve some permanent physical damage. Therapy for injuries should be started as soon as possible after the injury, if possible within 24 to 48 hours. Proper care is critical to prevent adhesions and scar tissue from forming unnecessarily, which will occur if treatment is delayed, or improper treatment with braces and collars which are often used in mild to moderate cases.
On-the-job injuries can include any or all of the above type injuries and may or may not require rehabilitation. Repetitive motion injuries such as carpal tunnel syndrome, lifting injuries (low back), and sprain/strain injuries, etc. respond well to Dr.Vail’s treatments. Dr. Vail does accept worker’s compensation with a signed authorization from your employer.
There are six major worker’s compensation studies showing chiropractic care to be superior to medical care in the treatment of on-the-job back injuries. Chiropractors have been able to get their patients out of pain and back to work faster and with lower treatment costs.
· The Utah study – fewer costs and days lost
· The Florida study – shorter disability/lower costs/lower hospitalization rates
· The California study – chiropractic patients get back to work sooner
· The Oregon study – chiropractic gets individuals back to work and fast!
· The Australian study – cost and pain relief effective with a lower chronicity rate
· The Manga report – “…injured workers…diagnosed with low back pain returned to work much sooner when treated by chiropractors than by physicians.”
TMJ Splints and Orthotics:
TMJ or TMD
TMJ, also known as TMD (Temporo Mandibular Disorder) stands for termporo mandibular joint, which is the joint connecting the lower jaw (mandible) to the skull (termporal bone). The lower jaw and skull are connected by a number of muscles and ligaments which work in harmony with each other if the lower jaw is in the correct alignment with the skull. The head of the lower jaw bone is called the glenoid fossa. There is a cushion or shock absorber between tese two bones called an articular disc. Various conditions from misaligned teeth, jaw traumas, cervical whip-lash injuries and others can cause TMD. It can be very painful and if not corrected, can cause damage to the joint. Treatment for TMJ, depending on the seriousness, is manual manipulation, stretching of the lower jaw, massage, microcurrent, and fitting the lower teeth with a splint to be worn for several weeks, especially at night. If clicking or popping is present, do not delay treatment.
· Headaches or neck aches
· Facial pain/numbness
· Ringing in the ears (Tinnitis)
· Pain or stuffiness in the ears
· Pain behind the eyes
· Shoulder and lower back pain
· Dizziness and fainting
· Difficulty swallowing
· Tingling in the fingers and hands
Orthotics or pedal (foot) stabilizers are custom made supports of the feet. Unbalanced pedal foundations such as loss of arch, pronations (the feet and ankles roll inward towards each other), supination (the feet and ankles do just the opposite of pronation – turn out), and corns on the sole of the feet can lead to distortions and a muscular stretching up the spine. Pronation causes the feet to “toe out” and the person will walk with the foot pointed outwards. This causes the lower leg to rotate inward, increasing the quadricep angle, cuasing a lot of stress on the medial (inside) knee joint. The whole body compensates for this shift. The base point of the body’s center of gravity shifts and the head attempts to maintain its position over the vertical center of gravity. Therefore the head and neck slide forward into anterior translation. This can, in time, cause pain and stiffness in the neck and upper back. The body’s overall stabilization efficiency is greatly reduced and it takes a lot more energy to maintain a standing posture all day long every day, contributing to fatigue and lack of stamina. Low back, hip problems, knee problems and ever upper back and neck problems can benefit from using orthotics to properly balance the feet. Metatarsal supports, heel wedges and heel lifts are also available.
Braces come in a lot of forms: back supports, wrist, shoulder, elbow, ankle or knee supports, Carpal tunnel supports and plantar fasciitis night brace (or splint).
Cervical pillows (nocturnal cervical traction devices) are available, as well as overhead cervical traction units. Professional, electrical massage units (“Jeannie Rub”) are also available.
